The Monmouth Civic Chorus under the baton of Dr. Mark Shapiro renews a traditional holiday classic with Messiah Plus Christmas Pops on Sunday, December 17, 2006, at 4:00 p.m. at the Count Basie Theatre, 99 Monmouth Street, Red Bank. The Christmas portion of Handel’s beloved oratorio will be performed with chamber orchestra, along with carols from around the world. Under its award-winning Artistic Director, Dr. Mark Shapiro, the Chorus has been acclaimed as “close to perfect” (Asbury Park Press), “sonorously impressive” (The Star-Ledger) and “a vital musical presence on the New Jersey classical music scene” (Classical New Jersey). Dr. Shapiro is also the Artistic Director of Cantori New York, Director of the Conducting Program of the European-American Musical Alliance in Paris, and a faculty member of Mannes College The New School for Music. His varied credits as an instrumental and opera conductor include Nova Sinfonia(Halifax),Works & Process at the Guggenheim Museum, The Actors Studio, Two River Theater, the Center for Contemporary Opera, the Banff Centre, Metro Lyric Opera; and PBS, where he was heard conducting the soundtrack for Ric Burns’ special on New York City
