The Monmouth Civic Chorus presents Sounds Like Shakespeare on Saturday, June 10 at 4:30 and 8:00 p.m. Shakespeare in music from Giuseppe Verdi’s Macbeth to Cole Porter’s Kiss Me Kate will delight both opera lovers and theater fans. Students from the English Speaking Union’s 2006 Monmouth County High School Shakespeare Competition will perform readings of Shakespearean classics. Under its award-winning Artistic Director, Dr. Mark Shapiro, the Chorus has been acclaimed as “close to perfect” (Asbury Park Press), “sonorously impressive” (The Star-Ledger) and “a vital musical presence on the New Jersey classical music scene” (Classical New Jersey). The Chorus has sung at the cathedrals of Vienna, Florence, and the Vatican, and by invitation at Carnegie Hall and with the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark. Dr. Shapiro is on the faculty of the Mannes College of Music in New York and the European-American Musical Academy at the Schola Cantorum in Paris.
